Book Description:
Catering to the current interest in increasing the spectral efficiency of optical fiber networks by the deployment of high-order modulation formats, this monograph describes transmitters, receivers and performance of optical systems with high-order phase and quadrature amplitude modulation. In the first part of the book, the author discusses various transmitter implementation options as well as several receiver concepts based on direct and coherent detection, including designs of new structures. Hereby, both optical and electrical parts are considered, allowing the assessment of practicability and complexity. In the second part, a detailed characterization of optical fiber transmission systems is presented, regarding a wide range of modulation formats. It provides insight in the fundamental behavior of different formats with respect to relevant performance degradation effects and identifies the major trends in system performance.
Part A Components and Subsystems
5th Edition
Optical Fiber Telecommunications V (A&B) is the fifth in a series that has chronicled the progress in the research and development of lightwave communications since the early 1970s. Written by active authorities from academia and industry, this edition not only brings a fresh look to many essential topics but also focuses on network management and services. Using high bandwidth in a cost-effective manner for the development of customer applications is a central theme. This book is ideal for R&D engineers and managers, optical systems implementers, university researchers and students, network operators, and the investment community.Volume (A) is...

Options and Strategies for Optical, MPLS, SONET and ATM Networking
Mesh-based survivability offers many advantages, but the research, educational and perational communications communities need to absorb new concepts and ideas about network operation; letting the network self-organize its own logical configuration for example. Operators also need to understand, evaluate and adopt new methods and models for network design and planning. This book is designed to contribute to enabling this evolution towards mesh-based survivable networking....
