Book Description:

The problem of exchanging data between different databases with different schemas is an area of immense importance. Consequently data exchange has been one of the most active research topics in databases over the past decade. Foundational questions related to data exchange largely revolve around three key problems: how to build target solutions; how to answer queries over target solutions; and how to manipulate schema mappings themselves? The last question is also known under the name 'metadata management', since mappings represent metadata, rather than data in the database. In this book the authors summarize the key developments of a decade of research. Part I introduces the problem of data exchange via examples, both relational and XML; Part II deals with exchanging relational data; Part III focuses on exchanging XML data; and Part IV covers metadata management.

Relational and XML Data Exchange

Relational and XML Data Exchange Image
Data exchange is the problem of finding an instance of a target schema, given an instance of a source schema and a specification of the relationship between the source and the target. Such a target instance should correctly represent information from the source instance under the constraints imposed by the target schema, and it should allow one to evaluate queries on the target instance in a way that is semantically consistent with the source data. Data exchange is an old problem that re-emerged as an active research topic recently, due to the increased need for exchange of data in various formats, often in e-business applications. In this lecture, we give an overview of the basic concepts of data exchange in both relational and XML contexts. We give...

Foundations of ASP.NET AJAX

Foundations of ASP.NET AJAX Image
Since the emergence of Google Maps, Ajax programming techniques have become one of the hottest topics in the programming arena. To date, the frameworks available for creating these applications have been complex and have separated the development of the clientside Ajax (on the users machine) from the serverside supporting technology (on the companys machines). This separation has made development slow and difficult. ASP.NET AJAX is Microsofts solution to this problem. ASP.NET AJAX (formerly codenamed Atlas) is a set of extensions to the existing ASP.NET 2.0 technology that provides you with a fast-and-simple environment to create Ajax applications. Microsoft has combined Ajax with ASP.NET technology and provided a unified set of development tools wit...

Foundations of Agile Python Development

Foundations of Agile Python Development Image
Youve long been enamored with the Python language, and have mastered its many nuances. Yet something seems to be missinga productivity boost that you know is possible but youre not sure how to go about it. This was the sentiment of so many developers before discovering Agile programming paradigm, which embraces concepts such as automation, effective code management, and testdriven development. Foundations of Agile Python Development is the first book to apply these soughtafter principles to Python developers, introducing both the tools and techniques built and supported by the Python community. Authored by Jeff Younker, a wellknown member of Pythons agile community who is perhaps best known for his creation of a popular Python testing framework, this...
